Types of Drug Rehab Centers

Drug Addiction Treatment

There are several different types of drug addiction treatment centers that all provide different options to patients. While one type of program may be especially beneficial to someone else you know, a completely separate program should often be chosen to reflect your specific needs.

Inpatient Rehab Centers

Inpatient treatment programs are some of the most intensive drug rehab centers available. Patients can receive 24-hour care in a hospital environment, and their activities are normally controlled from morning to evening. Those who require full hospitalization for a medical condition during drug addiction treatment are usually best suited to this type of program.

Residential Rehab Centers

Residential programs provide 24-hour care in a non-hospital setting, which is slightly less intensive than inpatient rehab. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, these facilities can offer both long and short-term programs, and patients who attend them usually require more structured treatment.

Residential care is suitable for those individuals who:

  • Are not safe at home or have a home life that is not conducive to recovery

  • Suffer from a co-occurring mental disorder in addition to addiction

  • Do not have a strong social support network of friends and family

  • Require resocialization as part of treatment

Therapeutic communities, a common form of residential rehab for substance use disorders, can usually meet the final requirement. As stated by the NIDA, TCs “encourage participants to examine their personal behavior to help them become more pro-social and to engage in ‘right living.’”

Outpatient Rehab Centers

Outpatient programs provide individuals with the option to attend a professional recovery program and still live their daily lives. These programs, according to a study from the medical journal Psychiatric Quarterly, “are more beneficial for patients with low psychiatric severity and/or a good social support system.”

Those whose situation is suitable for this program also avoid incurring the costs associated with inpatient and residential programs by attending outpatient rehab. Still, it is very important to ensure that the program you choose provides you with all the options you need, as many outpatient centers only offer drug education or other low-intensity treatments.

Other Types of Treatment Centers

Other options for drug rehab centers exist as well. For example, those who can afford it often choose to attend luxury rehab programs, which provide high-end accommodations and amenities to patients as well as additional treatment options (such as massage therapy, acupuncture, etc.).

These programs can be especially helpful to one’s recovery because they provide a comfortable atmosphere for treatment, but if you cannot afford to attend one, it is not necessary to do so.

In addition, free rehab centers mark the other end of the spectrum and provide treatment to those who would otherwise not be able to afford it. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 4% of all treatment programs provide care that is completely free, while other options exist that provide partial free care or treatment on a sliding fee scale.

Finding the Right Treatment Program

It isn’t easy to find the right choice of all the available drug rehab centers, but doing your research and understanding the different options at your disposal are important to the process. Even within these broad categories, many other more nuanced options exist in order to help you find the best option for your needs.
